DescriptionCopies of letters sent from the front, France and Mesopotamia, by John Solomon Riddell Hodgson, a young soldier in the First World War, to his parents and other members of his family. His letters have been copied out into a notebook with some letters having been transcribed and photocopied and pasted into the volume, the compiler is unknown. Pasted into the back of the volume are newspaper cuttings reporting the siege of Kut 1916, action in which Hodgson was involved.

Administrative HistoryJohn Solomon Riddell Hodgson (1896-1917) was educated at School House, Rugby and trained at Sandhurst before joining the Dorsetshire Regiment in December 1914. He was posted to France in 1915 and was gassed in the trenches and invalided home. Once he recovered he was posted along with his regiment to Persia. He was killed in action on 25 March 1917 in the Persian Hills, north-east of Baghdad and was buried there.
